Node.js
JavaScript on the server, modules and APIs.
9 parts · 9 labs · about 8 hours
Part 1: The server side
What changes when JavaScript runs on a server, what package.json is for, and where secrets live.
Part 2: Modules and waiting
Sharing code between files, promises, async/await, and doing things at the same time.
Part 3: Building an API
The parts of a request, routing by method and path, checking JSON from strangers, and failing safely.
Part 4: The HTTP details
What headers do, a session cookie written properly, deciding who may call you from a browser, and what may be cached.
Part 5: Data
Why a database rather than a file, queries values cannot hijack, the loop that makes a hundred queries, and work that is all or nothing.
Part 6: Accounts
Passwords stored so a stolen database is worthless, sessions that expire and rotate, and permission checks that deny by default.
Part 7: Tests worth having
Choosing cases by what could break, writing tests that survive a rewrite, and faking the database and the clock.
Part 8: Running it for real
What a deploy actually does, logs you can search, health checks that tell the truth, and shutting down without dropping anyone.
Part 9: The project
Build one API end to end from everything above: store, write endpoint, read endpoint and the router that ties them together.
